Abdullah Tivnikli was born on 8 April 1959 in the Mahallebaşı neighbourhood of Erzurum, where he lived until his family moved to Istanbul.

He completed primary school in Kültür Primary School, secondary school in Gazi Ahmet Muhtar Paşa and high school in Erzurum High School in 1976.

In 1976, he started his higher education at Istanbul Technical University, Department of Mechanical Engineering.

In 1978, ITU was closed down due to social unrest across the country, and Abdullah Tivnikli took the university exams again during this period and won Boğaziçi University.

When the university resumed education, he returned to ITU and completed his undergraduate degree and then completed his master's degree in the Business Engineering programme of the same university.

In 1983, he won a scholarship for higher education in the UK and went to the UK for a second Master's degree in Engineering Economics. He returned to Turkey in 1984 after losing his father Sıddık Bey in a tragic accident.

Inspired by the interest-free banking studies and with the proposal of Korkut Özal, Hak Yatırım, the first venture in this field, was established.

Tivnikli pioneered the establishment of Albaraka Türk in 1984 by adopting the principles of "transferring resources to the economy without intermediaries and taking income sharing as a basis instead of fixed returns" while continuing his interest-free banking activities.

In 1986, he founded Eksim Holding with his brother Fahreddin Tivnikli.
In 1988, he left Albaraka Türk.

He also pioneered the establishment of Kuveyt Türk in 1988.
He contributed greatly to the development of Anatolian capital through Participation Banks until 2003.
Eksim Holding started its first trade with Sudan; it brought sesame seeds from Sudan and sold wheat, flour and lentils in return.

He participated in grain tenders in Turkey. At a young age, he helped Pakistan obtain a 50 million dollar loan from the Islamic Development Bank. Starting with 100 thousand tonnes, he increased his grain exports to 400 thousand tonnes.

In the early 90s, he was offered to establish a flour factory in Algeria. When the flour factory could not be established due to procedures, he established Eksun in Tekirdag and realised flour sales in large quantities by adhering to the agreement with Algeria

From 1988 until 2015, he actively took part in the management of Kuveyt Türk for 27 years. In 2015, he left the Board of Directors of Kuveyt Türk.

Since the early 2000s, Eksim Holding has initiated significant investments and R&D activities in the energy sector. Eksim Holding continued to work with more than thirty different companies in its portfolio, mainly in the food and energy sectors.

He pioneered the establishment of the Centre for Scientific Research (İLAM), which focuses on academic education. Afterwards, ADAM was also a pioneer in the establishment of institutions such as IBAV and GENÇ.

He undertook important missions in the establishment of the Foundation for Political, Economic and Social Research (SETA), a think tank established in 2006 to provide a thought and science-based approach to politics.

He helped to establish the Istanbul Research and Education Foundation (ISAR), which he described as a "big project" with international effectiveness and which aims to put forward new approaches in the training of scholars.

In 2014, he lost his brother Fahrettin Tivnikli.

In 2018, he established the foundation system, which he has been dreaming of and working on for many years, and established the foundation funds by carrying out the necessary procedures.

Abdullah Tivnikli, a member of the Board of Trustees of Istanbul Sabahattin Zaim University and Honorary Consul of the Kingdom of Bahrain, father of four children, passed away on 6 November 2018 in the hospital where he was being treated.
